The V5

Change is good

Well rather surprisingly, after posting it on the 21/01/15 and it only being away to DVLA for 9 days, I got the V5 document back yesterday.

And it's good news, I now own a 'Motor Caravan'  :)

The Insurance

Nearly Broker Me

So it was a call (or lots of them as it turned out) to my insurance company today, to get advise on when/how to change the policy over to motorhome now the V5 has been sent away.

Phoned them today, and then had a hellish day trying to sort out insurance.

Turns out my current provider don't do motorhome insurance, and their 'specialist' motorhome team don't do self-builds!

So they recommended a partner company (broker) who couldn't find an insurance company to take me.... with varying reasons being postcode area, my occupation, my 9 points or my no claims.

I had no choice either as I had been cancelled with my current company and so no way am paying their £50 fee either.

And this wasted a good while of my day making calls to them above, and waiting on call backs.

Decided to try through a comparison site, I got a few quotes from it and I also contacted Adrian Flux who specialise in motorhomes.

Adrian Flux were one of the better quotes I got, but one company were better still so just had to decide what suited me best.

And so after a couple of calls back and forward between them, I've changed my insurance over to Staveley Head.

Got to admit, their customer service was faultless, they were pretty much the cheapest, best excess and various other points which suited my needs.

Insurance for a motor home is cheaper than a van/minibus too, so over the year I am now £168 cheaper plus I now have UK Roaside, Recovery & Homestart breakdown cover too which is worth about another £80

So now that's official, I've got an insured self build motorhome!!

The DVLA

Time for Change

Sorry not been any updates of late, but since the last post I've not done anything. I've been away plus working etc so no time (or money till end of month).

Anyway, what I have done is send off to the DVLA to have the vehicle body type changed on the V5 document.

This is just one of the things I need to change on paper, the others being to change the vehicle tax class and then change the insurance.

So to change the body type, I've done a cover letter explaining the changes, took photos of all the changes required, included some receipts of things like the smev unit, table etc and then sent it all off.

I was going to do the tax change at the some time, but in getting conflicting info am going to check into it a bit more in relation to the weight/tax/mot class. There is tax on it just now till March so thought I would get the body type then insurance done first.

The MOT is due in 4 weeks time too, am just hoping it doesn't have anything major wrong with it!!

The Lift

We Have Lift Off

At last, it is gone!

3 months later than planned, but thanks to Bill at Alfa Tail Lifts in Cumbernauld, the van went in today to get it removed.

I never paid for it's removal either, having tried to sell it myself and they have also tried, still no one wants it... so they can keep it and sell it on if they can.

Am glad it's gone, as I can now do the drainage for the shower/sink, when the better weather comes.

Plus there is probably now about 1/2 tonne less weight on board, I could tell driving it home as it went uphill that bit faster now, oh and will use less diesel!

The Progress 3

3 Month Review

Firstly, as expected not a lot has been done in the last month,

I put some Veltrim up to cover the partition etc, put a couple of poles up, installed the table mounting and fitted the boiler exhaust.. and that has been it!

Now the festive season is out the way, and soon as I can get the bank balance back in the black, I will get on with it.

First job of the year will be to get rid of the damn tail-lift, as it's in the way of me doing the drainage for the shower.. can't even give the thing away :(

Happy New Year to you all
